Personal Web Site F.A.Q.

Why would I want to have my own Personal Webspace?
Webspace is your very own piece of the World Wide Web. It is a section of the linkLINE server that, as a subscriber, you may use to publish Web pages of your own. Your Webspace is only limited by your imagination. You could use your Webspace site to:

  • Share your own personal hobbies or interests

  • Showcase your family pictures, artwork, or writing for the world to see.

  • Tell the world about your business or product.

  • Create a Web site for fans of your favorite musician, athlete, or author.

Other than the restrictions and exceptions outlined in our Terms & Conditions, your Webspace can be anything you want it to be. Best of all, it is free with your linkLINE membership (up to 15MB of disk space)

How do I create my webspace?
The URL (/spacer.gif) that is used to access your personal web page is always: http://www.linkline.com/personal/username

where 'username' is your username or login you signed up with. The main page of your Webspace should have one of the following file names (in order of preference):

  • default.htm

  • default.html

  • index.html

  • index.html

The server will default to this page when some visits your http://www.linkline.com/personal/username/ address. Otherwise, when you pass your address on to others, you will have to add the specific filename after the /username/.

What is the URL of my webspace?
http://www.linkline.com/personal/username - where 'username' is your username or login you signed up with.

How much does it cost?
Personal Webspace is free with your linkLINE account. You get 15MB of disk space.

Can I run my own CGI scripts?
For security reasons members will not be able to run their own CGI scripts within their Webspace. There are a few common CGI scripts written for you that may be used by visiting the Webspace.

How can I find out how many visitors my website is having?
You can add a hit counter to your website. View our Webspace tools for more information on setting up your hit counter.

Can I do secure transactions using my Personal Webspace?
No. Personal Webspace is designed for personal use only. If you want to use your Webspace for a small business, you may do so, but you will not be able to conduct credit card transactions or orders with secure encryption. Note that commercial use of the site in this regard is prohibited under the Webspace Terms & Conditions.

How much Webspace do I have?
All standard dial-up accounts come with 15MB of Personal Webspace.

Can I increase my Webspace size?
Yes! EMail our WebMaster to request additional space. We do charge a monthly fee of $5 for each additional 5MB of space.

Can I use MS Frontpage with my Webspace?
Yes and No. You can use Frontpage to create and edit your web pages on your own computer and upload (publish) your site to your Webspace folder. However, you can't use Frontpage to edit or administrate your Webspace directly because our Webspace server does not currently support the Frontpage server extensions that this requires

To use Frontpage to create your Webspace, simply create your "Frontpage Web" in a folder on your home computer as per the instructions. Once you are satisfied with your site follow the instructions here to upload your site.

Does Webspace have the server extensions that MS Frontpage requires to administrate a "Frontpage Web"?
Not currently. However, this does not prevent you from using Frontpage to create and edit your site. The missing sever extensions mean that you will not be able to set permissions for other web users to edit your pages and utilize features such as Frontpage's discussion groups and form applications etc. However, as long as you ensure that the Frontpage installer places the server extensions on your home computer, the other tools in Frontpage will work fine. There is only one added step of "publishing" your site to your Webspace folder once you are through with your changes.

We are currently exploring the possibility of (and the security concerns that arise from) supporting the MS Frontpage server extensions.

How do I upload/FTP pages to my Webspace?
How do I "publish" my site to Webspace using MS Frontpage or Netscape Page Composer?
Check our Personal Webspace FTP instructions for more help.

Can I use my webspace to host my EBay pictures?
Yes! If you are selling something on Ebay or any other auction sites, your images can be stored on your personal webspace.
Example: You have a picture on your computer of a Pez Dispenser you are selling on Ebay. The filename is "pez.jpg". Open your FTP client of choice and connect to your webspace, and upload your file. You can then access the image by typing in the address: http://www.linkline.com/personal/username/pez.jpg

How do I submit my page to external search engines?
Entering your site into search engines is easy. For each site you want to be listed under, simply visit the site and look for their link to "Submit a site". Follow the directions provided for you. If you wish to save time, visit a site called Submit-it. On Submit-it you enter your information into a single form and then choose from a list which search engines you want your info sent to.
